The Mining Industry has experienced a mammoth development of the size of equipment used over the years. As the size of mining equipment increases, the problems with the visibility from large mining haul trucks and smaller highway vehicles increase proportionately. Many attempts had been made to obtain better visibility by adding antennas with flags and eventually adding lights to alert the operators of the heavy haul trucks and other large equipment of the presence of smaller vehicles. The problems of reliability of the current products including the changing demands to the increasing sizes of equipment has prompted HBM Canada Inc. to develop better safety products to adapt to this changing industry.

Jim Matei the president of HBM Canada Inc. has worked in the mining industries including the Oil & Gas Industry for over 35 years and has seen actual accidents occur and near misses due to problems associated with the visibility problems of Heavy Hauler Trucks, Large Mining Equipment and other hazardous situations.

The development of the Electroluminescent Safety Flag came as a result of trying to find a solution of lighting and materials that would give additional visibility aid to operators of the increasing size of mining equipment to avoid potential damage and improve the safety of operations in all mining aspects.

The EL Fibre Safety Flag uses a patent protected wire by LyTec by US Patent No. 5,869,930 and China Patent No. ZL-97121158

This LyTec Electroluminescent Wire was incorporated into a High Visibility Orange Flag to create a Box with an X so it is easily distinguished from other light sources. This gives the operators of large mining equipment a distinct advantage of recognizing that an immediate hazard exists and attention is required over conventional lighting sources. The unique Neon Glowing light has the ability to attract the human eye as well as show up well in vehicle equipped camera’s.
